The Norethisterone pill is a drug prescribed to women with the aim of delaying their period. The treatment belongs to a group of female sex hormones known as progestin. Norethisterone works by imitating the action of natural sexual hormones in the woman’s body. It is important to remember that the treatment cannot be taken by women already taking other medication like birth control pills, barbiturates, griseofulvin, cyclosporine, nevirapine, St. John’s wort or rifamycin.
Drugs for delaying menstruation allow the user to suspend their menstruation process. Many reasons can explain a willingness to delay one’s period. Menstrual pain can be particularly troublesome and painful. It can, for example, complicate the ability to concentrate at a job interview, or when revising an examination.
Menstrual bleeding may be synonymous with discomfort and it can be difficult to control while on vacation at the beach, or at a special event.
The duration of treatment will depend on how long one wishes to delay their period. Norethisterone can help offset menstruation for up to two weeks. It works by controlling the menstrual cycle and preventing necrosis and shedding of the uterine lining.
Each month, the body goes through different stages in order to prepare the body for a possible pregnancy. This process is controlled by the natural hormones progesterone and oestrogen. When progesterone levels fall, the lining of the uterine wall breaks and is removed from the uterus via menstrual bleeding.
The active ingredient of Norethisterone mimics the function of progesterone. Its presence indicates to the body that the lining of the uterine lining should not be rejected from the body so that a period does not have to take place.
How does the treatment work?
The Norethisterone pill allows women to delay their periods for up to 12 days. Every month after the ovulation period; the female body prepares for a potential pregnancy by seeing her progesterone levels increase. In order to accommodate the egg, the uterine wall widens for pregnancy to take place; that is if the egg is fertilised. If the egg is not fertilised, progesterone levels weaken, consequently causing the shedding of the uterine wall, which is then evacuated from the woman’s uterus. The overall process is known as menstruation or periods.
Progesterone, namely the woman’s sexual hormone, has other advantages than just delaying periods. The pill also makes it possible to treat heavy menstrual bleeding, blood loss between each menstruation, and to reduce pain associated with periods.
What is the dosage of the treatment?
To delay one’s period with the Norethisterone pill, doctors recommend taking the 5mg dosage. The pill is taken three times per day. It is recommended to start the treatment three days before menstruation begins and stop when you want to have a period. Generally, bleeding will first arrive two to three days after stopping Norethisterone.
What are the side effects of Norethisterone?
While almost all treatments subject to prescription have side effects, Norethisterone does not usually have any. This makes it one of its major assets. Women who do experience some side effects might feel itching, headaches, nausea or even a decreased libido.
What are the contraindications?
This treatment to delay menstruation can only be bought by women aged at least 18 years old. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding cannot take Norethisterone. The drug is also not advised for women with an allergy to one of the existing components.
Finally, the pill is not advised if you suffer from cancer of the cervix, breast, genitalia, ovaries, or if you have a liver tumour. For more information on the contraindications, we invite you to read the Norethisterone manual.
How should the pill be stored?

The first rule is to keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and adolescents. Only women over 18 can take the treatment. yes I use norethisterone sometimes – I’ve used it twice before and never had any side effects. It lets me move my period by 6 days. When I stopped taking it my period arrived the next day or the day after that. It’s very reliable so I’ve got a very high opinion of it. I read on forums that it was too strong but I think it’s just right.
